Our services

The department leads a coordinated approach to the delivery of:

  • Infrastructure
The Coordinator-General administers the State Development and Public Works Organisation Act 1971, along with the relevant Minister. Under this act, the Coordinator-General has wide-ranging powers to plan, deliver and coordinate large-scale infrastructure projects, while ensuring their environmental impacts are properly managed.
  • Planning
We provide leadership by collaborating with state agencies, local government and other stakeholders to effectively plan for growth and infrastructure provision in Queensland, to maintain a high quality of life and facilitate sustainable development.

After the 2012 state election, two functions of the former Department of Local Government and Planning have moved to other departments:

  • Building and plumbing
Sitting with the Department of Housing and Public Works, Building Codes Queensland ensures high-quality and cost-effective building and plumbing codes and an efficient system for approving building and plumbing work. This protects and enhances the health, safety and wellbeing of Queenslanders.
  • Local government
These functions have been transferred to the Department of Local Government. The department works with local governments to deliver sustainable and accountable local government services and advise in the areas of governance, monitoring and performance evaluation, interventions and investigations, capacity building and funding and targeted initiatives in support of Indigenous local governments.
