Our department

Current priorities for the department include:

  • The Coordinator-General is delivering major projects important to the state's development by streamlining assessment and approval processes.
  • On 20 April 2012, Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney appointed Assistant Minister Ian Walker as the "go to" person for the property and construction industry. This provides a direct communication line between industry and the state government, and assists the department to develop relationships with industry stakeholders.
  • The department is preparing statutory regional plans for the Darling Downs and the Golden Triangle to balance the interests of mining, resource development and other industries such as agriculture.
  • Work is underway to reform the Sustainable Planning Act (SPA) 2009 to make it the most cost efficient, time effective planning framework in Australia.
  • Infrastructure Queensland is being established to advise the state government on long-term infrastructure planning, prioritisation and ongoing management and maintenance.
  • The department is working closely with the Department of Transport and Main Roads through the Bruce Highway Crisis Group, announced on 19 April 2012, to mount an ongoing campaign dedicated to continually improving the Bruce Highway.
  • The department is working to identify state planning powers that can be transferred to local governments to better empower them to plan for their communities.
  • The government is establishing the GasFields Commission to better manage the coexistence between landholders, regional communities and the coal seam gas industry in Queensland. The Deputy Premier announced Mr John Cotter on 19 April 2012 as the Gas Fields Land and Water Chairman.
  • The department is establishing the framework to begin identifying projects for investment under our Royalties for the Regions initiatives to benefit communities in resource regions.
  • The government is initiating negotiations with the federal government for better flood mitigation funding arrangements in Queensland.
  • A Property and Construction Cabinet Committee has been established, chaired by the Queensland Treasurer.
  • In addition to these priorities, there are several other initiatives being rolled out to ensure the government's 100 Days Plan is delivered.
